Ethanol Fireplaces

Frequently Asked Questions about Ethanol Fireplaces and Ethanol Fuel:

How do Ethanol Fireplaces operate?

Ethanol fireplaces are fuelled with bioethanol; no chimney is required. The principle is the same as that of a fondue burner.

Where is the bioethanol added?

Directly into a reservoir (or burner) located in the base of the fireplace.

How much bioethanol is poured into the reservoir?

Up to the top of the vertical slots inside the burner. Rectangle Face Model #65184 holds 1.4 L, Square Face Model #65174 and Round Face Model #65185 each hold 0.9 L, and Freestanding Model #65169 (tubular) and column style #65170 each hold 0.75 L.

How much does bioethanol cost?

A 4 L container of bioethanol retails for $29.99 or more. Owners of Ethanol® fireplaces can purchase bioethanol on our Web site (www.vitalwares.ca)

What is the hourly consumption of bioethanol?

A 4 L container of bioethanol produces 12 to 20 hours of flame, based on the intensity selected.

Does the remaining bioethanol in the reservoir evaporate?

Very little, as long as the valve is kept completely closed between uses.

What is the recommended maintenance for a Ethanol fireplace?

At least once a month, wash the reservoir and grate with soapy water and rinse with clear water to remove any residue deposits.

Can Ethanol fireplaces be used for heating?

No. Ethanol fireplaces are considered to be ambiance fireplaces. You may, however, feel some heat output from the flame and a slight increase in room temperature.

Are Ethanol fireplaces regulated?

Yes, the Ethanol fireplaces are UL certified (Underwriter’s Laboratory).

What are Ethanol fireplaces made of?

Ethanol fireplaces are constructed with a quality stainless steel frame and powder-coated hearth. The double metal rear wall and slots below and above the fireplace allow for circulation of the hot air produced during burning of the bioethanol (same principle as that of a convector).

Can Ethanol wall mounted fireplaces be enclosed?

No. For safety reasons, the fireplaces must be wall mounted (like a picture frame) to allow the hot air to circulate all around

When installing a wall model, how much space (clearance) should be left above and below the fireplace?

With wall-mounted fireplaces, please refer to the instruction manual for the fireplace.

What is bio ethanol made of? Is it similar to the ethanol used in cars?

The ethanol sold at gas station pumps is “crude” and intended for use in vehicle motors, whereas the bioethanol that we use is refined and specifically intended for interior combustion. Made from corn, it is also called “denatured alcohol.” The prefix “bio” indicates that it is from a plant source.

Can I use wood alcohol found in hardware stores?

No. Wood alcohol is intended for exterior use only. Using anything other than the bioethanol made for Ethanol® fireplaces can be very hazardous to your health and safety.

Can I use fondue alcohol or gel in your fireplaces?

This will only produce a very small blue flame.

Where is bio ethanol produced?

In Canada.
